Farewell Tommy Dreamer
February 7th 2010 12:29
It was sad to see Tommy Dreamer depart the WWE, being the last ECW original it really made sense for ECW to finally be put to death, Dreamer was there from the beginning until ECW's untimely death. It seems appropriate now to pay tribute to the man that was the face of ECW during the last few years, a man that rose up through the ranks starting out as someone the fans hated until he won them over against The Sandman during their feud.
I feel Dreamer and Raven will always hold the best ever ECW feud it was a shame that the fued came to an end when Raven departed for WCW, at the time though Raven did want for Tommy to depart for WCW as well. But Dreamer was loyal to ECW, he never wanted to be the main guy, he never wanted to be the World Champion, he never seemed to want any type of titles, book him, let him do his thing and he will go home a happy man.
In fact in a quote for the Rise and Fall of ECW DVD Dreamer was quoted in saying...
I was actually pissed off. I wanted to go my entire ECW career without winning titles. The only reason I won titles is because guys left.
It was a shame when Dreamer came to the WWE that he was never really used in a way that he could have been, he always seemed to be the midcard jobber that came to work went home and had no real storylines. Even during the Invastion angle but I guess that was Dreamer's career, he just wanted to a guy out there working matches and putting others over. There are not many men in the business like Dreamer, a lot of workers are looking at doing whatever they can to claw their way to the World Title and to be the man that is always in the spotlight, what was Dreamer? Enhancement talent.
Sure he would get a win here and there and a title here and there he even captured the WWECW Title before his WWE departure it does seem that Dreamer's career as a wrestler is over. At least on the main stage, reports suggest that Dreamer has a job as a road agent waiting for himonce the 90 day no compete clause, if there is one ends. Though it would be good to see the Raven/Dreamer feud one last time on the main stage, with Raven and Stevie who have since vanished since the new TNA began attacking Foley and Abyss, why not bring them back to do this, and then Dreamer, who was a friend of Foley's in the past, Funks come into the company and attacks Raven and Richards and this could then set up a match?
Dreamer will be making some appearances on the Indy scene though, he will be appearing at UCW (Universal Championship Wrestling) "Payback" his match there which is on February 20th is against another former ECW star Shane Douglas, the event will be taking place in Ardmore, Oklahoma. It will be interesting to see how far he goes with that company, as he has been added to their roster as well.
I would imagine that Dreamer has a lot more left to give to wrestling, TNA for example are looking for mentors to mentor some of their young wrestlers, or so Hogan has been saying when he wants to bring in the likes of Randy Savage, who now looks like Santa Claus. Dreamer could work one last year, if he wanted to as a wrestler, surely a feud with Raven, Abyss, Stevie Richards, and Mick Foley could be a good way for him to go out, that's if he wants to do that it probably never happen that way and Dreamer may never work a match with TNA, but there Jay Lethal could have him come in as apart of the Jay Lethal Invitational angle that seems to have died now.
You do not need to worry about Dreamer being one of the guys that would put himself above the younger TNA stars, he would be there solely as someone ready to enhance a star. He's pretty much the new Terry Funk in that regard a guy that will probably struggle to leave the business, but always know where the future of this business lies now that they are old. The business needs a few more of these types, who will do their best to get over young stars and will not try and make themselves the best thing there and win all the belts.
Wouldn't that be grand? Seeing an old guy there to make someone look good, instead of holding him down? That's something that WCW could have used. Whatever happens with Tommy Dreamer, whether it be a TNA Road Agent, TNA Wrestler/Road Agent, or just a father who leaves the business entirely and finds a new living to do now that his wrestling career has passed him by, I am sure Tommy will do it in the best possible way, and will always be the Innovator of Violence.
Good luck Tommy, you have entertained so many of us ECW fans for years, now it's time for you to re-enter the real world, and grow old with your loved ones, saviouring the moments you once had in the business. You are going to be missed by many.
