The NXT Experiment: The NXT WWE failing or success?
March 15th 2010 06:13
NXT is still in it's infancy with the crowds, but it seems the ratings are not any better then the ECW on SyFy show that it replaced. A debut which showed some promise made some expect this concept to be a winner with the fans, but this show has started to slide, it took a massive slide last week and the week before the ratings were down, will it survive? WWE will probably persist with the show until the end of the current season. The announcers for the show seem to be confused with the way the show is meant to go.
Firstly the rules are the Mentors of the rookies are evaluating, sure that sounds fine, the mentors cannot vote for their wrestler, yeah that is very reasonable, but then came the last one, WWE mentors cannot vote against their wrestler. Wait back up, they cannot vote for or against their wrestler, but their vote is the one that makes them the winner? So how does one actually win after they are evaluated?
Not that it matters anyway, because we already know that this "reality" show is not reality anyway, the concept was interesting from the start, but we know that there is already a winner in mind, in fact, it seems that the WWE are pressing for one of them to maybe join the WWE roster earlier then most would have expected with the push for Daniel Bryan early on NXT it seems he is the firm favourite for the win on the show. Heath Slater too would be another that will be featuring on either Raw or Smackdown either at the end of this show, or towards the end both appear to be ahead of their NXT Rookies, with Otunga coming in a distant third, and Justin Gabriel being fourth, that is, how I see this.
WWE will probably remove two, and then we may see Otunga, Barrett, or Gabriel battle it out for the title. But I think the main stars so far have been the for-mentioned stars. And I think WWE also agree on this, as they have been pressing them. Skip Sheffield does have that goofy character type down pat and he has appear to have a bit of charisma, and a bit of talent, but still think he's a bit of the way away from being up there with the others.
But what does the future have in store for the show? I doubt that the WWE are going to persist with it past maybe 3 seasons, maybe 2 is the limit for the new improved Tough Enough. It just seems more and more like Velocity/HeAT then anything each week. I had hopes that the WWE would have them filming in a meeting with the road agents, and backstage staff discussing how their match should go, and how they are going to do certain aspects of the show.
A tad bit like how Beyond The Mat were filming backstage of the WWE, they had all the wrestlers there and the road agents, and the VP of Talent at the time Jim Ross and also Jim Cornette having a discussion about these young guys and how they were doing. Being that the mentors are meant to evaluate the wrestlers having a shot of them around a monitor backstage "evaluating" them and having minor criticism of the matches would be a good touch, since this is meant to be a "reality" program.
At least with Hogan's Celebrity wrestling you got to see how they trained and prepared for a match against an op[ponent. I have been a bir disappointed since the decent debut show the show has been lackluster and not that appealing, which again comes back to why the ratings took a massive nose dive. I am sure the WWE had thoughts that if they put some of these top guys on there it would draw, well I am sure vince, it won't.
Going by the current pattern the show can expect another nose dive in ratings, and I am sure people are still saying "lol zomg it's still better than Impacts ratings!" well Impact was a far better show on Monday and the ratings should have reflected that but didn't.
I hope that the next WWE NXT show is better, because since the debut I have not been that keen to watch anymore shows. I only watch now because of Slater, Gabriel and Bryan and watching them has been better then most of the show, but I am warming to Wade Barrett as well so it's not all bad I guess. Turning this show back into Velocity and adding some stars that are struggling for TV time could save the show, though they are kinda doing that with Superstars, but even that is usually unbearable to watch too.
In short it is hard to tell at the moment, show one appeared to be a success ratings wise, and then show two dipped, and show three flatlined. In the world of internet spoilers, a boring show on report makes for a person ready to not want to watch the show.
By now it seems that Raw and Smackdown are going to rate, Superstars doesn't generally and now neither does NXT. I wonder if that means WWE should come together and maybe trial a third 2 hour show, showing the past events from ECW, WCW, WCCW, AWA, etc. Since WWE has the footage and many people are interested in seeing the real ECW and some are wanting to see some old WCW, why not do that? Seems fair enough really.
