WWE Raw (August 1) thoughts
August 2nd 2007 04:35
Another very average episode of Raw this week. The biggest news coming out of the show is the horrible rating it did (a 2.4, its lowest in a decade and over 25% lower than last weeks' show). Losing a quarter of the audience in one week is obviously not good, and WWE have got to be in damage control right now. Wouldn't surprise me if they'll resort to begging the Jackass guys to come back on board. Anyways, onto the show...
Well, the opening sequence has been the same for so many weeks in a row now. Cena opens the show, starts talking, gets interrupted by a handful of people who say they deserve a title shot. As I've mentioned before, the writing of these sorts of segments at the moment (particularly Cena's lines) are pathetic. Cena's lines now generally tend to be either:
-Lame 4th-grade playground insults ("I'm gonna shove your apples up your cabana")
-Lame pop-culture jokes that seem like they were extracted from a bad Leno monologue ("Four years ago, Lindsay Lohan did her first line... of dialogue").
-Lame and generic wrestling-promo lines ("I've got your number").
The guy is obviously great on the mic, shame the material is just so pathetic.
Wow! I'm surprised WWE acknowledged a storyline from a few years back (the Cena/Carlito stabbing angle). Usually continuity in wrestling is non-existant.
The women's match was pretty poor. They really should've had Beth and Jillian in different outfits, as they looked identical (and I don't even think JR could tell which one was which). I must say though, Santino's character is hilarious!! He was probably the highlight of the show for me this week. His promo complaining about the cheating in the women's match was very well-done, and I'm all for an Umaga face run!!
It's very refreshing to see them start a new face (Cody Rhodes) out at the bottom (losing to Orton two times, now wrestling Daivari) as opposed to doing what they usually do and make the new guys squash people and be undefeated for a few months until they don't know what to do with them next, and ultimately end up turning them into jobbers. I'm sure starting out in the lower tier of the card as opposed to having, say, an undefeated streak will be much more beneficial to Cody in the long-run.
The King Booker V King Lawler is probably my favourite feud at the moment, and I'm glad it looks like it's continuing (I thought tonight's match would be the payoff before Booker's feud with HHH). And the live crowd seems to always be mega-hot for the matches/segments in the feud. I thought they had a decent bout-- though I would've preferred for them to have a 20-or-so minute match at the Bash PPV.
Cryme Tyme's schtick is very hit and miss. Sometimes it is pretty funny (Their pre-debut skits were all gold, and I can remember a couple other of their segments being funny too), but sometimes it's painfully unfunny (the George Bush segment for a while back comes to mind). I must say though, I did enjoy the little auction thingy they did on the show. And the crowd were into them too, so that's good.
The stretcher-spot has officially become overdone. Orton concussing Slaughter was pretty pointless, just done to put another name of the list. With that said though, I am enjoying Orton being in the main-event scene once again. The Orton/Cena feud is shaping up very nicely.
Carlito and Kennedy getting pinfall wins over the usually-untouchable Cena and Lashley on the same night was very surprising! Carlito seemingly being on the recieving end of a big push again is quite surprising in itself (especially considering that just last week he was in a midcard feud against Sandman and Jim Duggan).

IF YOU MISSED IT: Well, you obviously weren't alone, as seen by the alarmingly-low rating! No need to try and get a hold of this one, it was a pretty bland ep.
