Post Against All Odds Thoughts
February 16th 2010 16:58
I have to say I am surprised with the way the PPV went, in parts I never expected that D'Angelo Dinero would become the winner of the 6 Card Stud Tournament, I had expected Ken Anderson watching the PPV with my dad at the time we were both discussing that Ken Anderson was part of the future of the company along with Dinero, Wolfe, and a few others but I am pleased to say I have enjoyed the event, though I did not enjoy the Foley/Abyss match, but there are reasons for that clearly it was meant to be set up as an angle and they were telling a story. Hernandez and Morgan was not a complete bore, The Nasty Boys and Team 3D was as expected, with a minor surprise for the PPV, surprise in genral? Not really I had expected to see Jimmy Hart back in wrestling in fact he pretty much confirmed it before the event but there was not debut date.
Sadly this means we are going to see more of The Nasty Boys, look I will be honest here it's not that they are 45 now and are friends of Hogan, no it's never been just that and it's never been that I have never liked them at all. The fact remains that they just do not have anything really to offer, it's like signing Honky Tonk Man and pushing him as a wrestler, it's on par with signing Ed Leslie and thinking he's going to win you ratings, I hate to say this but they would never win TNA ratings, not now, not 20 years ago not even if they were in a match of the year, it's just they are not worthy of being on the roster and we know why they are.
Jimmy Hart was a good manger and a good music composer maybe he can assist Dale Oliver with the TNA themes and we can remove the obvious WCW/WWE/ECW modifications of songs and move on with the new themes, I think that is another thing TNA needs to do, move away from having guys like Team 3D, Eric Bischoff, Hulk Hogan, having songs that are clearly close to the themes they used before TNA. I know I have missed our Raven, but I do like his theme, and I am not sure he will be around TNA much longer for it to really matter, shame.
So let's get onto the matches since this was the point of the blog.
8 Card Stud Tournament: Pope D'Angelo Dinero vs. Desmond Wolfe
I have to say that I still hate both names of these guys, but Dinero manages to take the gimmick he portrays and makes it a good one and makes you forgot the name it's growing on me every time he works a TNA event. Desmond Wolfe was the name that Nigel managed to come up with, TNA did allow him to use his name but he decided to google the common names in England and here we are. Names aside both men are good workers, good on the mic, and this was a very good match I can watch these two again in a match more longer then this one I had expected that Desmond was going to win, and I was surprised and it was good to see the predictable route was missed here.
8 Card Stud tournament: TNA Tag Team champion Matt Morgan vs. TNA Tag Team champion Hernandez
This was an ok match, it was not bad and it was not great it was between the two, I know a ot of people probably do not want to say this but I think Matt Morgan is improving becoming a better worker and his promos are way better, though this is no shot at the WWE, but they could have helped make him better then have him stutter....and Hernandez well his mic work still sucks. But again it was a decent match, the winner was expected and I did also expect there was going to be something to turn them singles, I actually thought that maybe this would have had a run in. Just the history that Hernandez had with Homicide and such.
8 Card Stud Tournament: Mr. Anderson vs. Kurt Angle
The match was good, but I think that given more time, which on this PPV I reckon would have been at times hard to find becauase of the card it could have been even better. Ken Anderson stalked Angle and almost lost the match, again pushing his cockiness around at people and again it was a match that could have gone either way, with Desmond and Kurt feuding I had expected a bit of a conflict between the two but that was never done, and we had a decent tournament with the lack of run ins one thing I do hate is run ins during every match, and while I do understand the need for them at times, like this match here seeing them at every match is annoying. I predicted an Anderson win and it was how it went, but left the door open for an Angle win, or a storyline being made from this one, I expect that TNA are going to play on the Angle/Hogan/Hall/Waltman thing I couldn't see them letting that die down.
8 Card Stud Tournament: Abyss vs. Mick Foley - No DQ.
Passable, not the best match you will ever see as a wrestling match they worked an angle where they did try and not force pain on each other like they were demanded to. They tried their hardest to take it easy on each other, and show the agony of every decision they had to make within the match. The match was more a drama, Mick Foley pulled out the tacks and he ate them, not literally he was blackhole slammed onto them. I will admit I had different booking ideas for this match, involving the former ECW stars still (at last look) on the roster, there was still the issue because Dr. Stevie/Raven and Abyss and Mick Foley although since January it seems to have waned but, I would have maybe had these two become goons of Eric's and we would see the story progress with Eric threatening to sack Abyss, Borash and co, though now that Bubba does appear to be gone, Borash came back in their revised storyline which I am happy about. But Abyss did end up winning and advanced.
The Nasty Boys vs. Team 3D
I will admit that I paid little to no attention to this match the bits I saw while I was researchig for another blog made me wonder why TNA thought this was a good idea, as far as I am concerned this match tanked, Jimmy Hart passed along a helmet to the Nasty Boys they used it and won the match and that ended a horrible chapter in the TNA PPV, I am probably biased here one of you readers reading this want to rate it and tell me if you want to see it again? I have been a fan of Team 3D for years now but this match wasn't savable. Hey we're getting an X Division PPV? Cool. Oh, next match? Yeah enough.
8 Card Stud Semi-Final: D'Angelo Dinero vs. Matt Morgan
It was ok, Morgan made a mistake and Dinero managed to get his finisher and win the match, standard match that we can possible forget about much like the next match really, it was a shock win but it was a match that managed to push Dinero, Morgan will no doubt get his chance later in the next year or two.
8 Card Stud Tournament: Abyss vs. Ken Anderson
Standard match Abyss was blinded by his mask, and was beaten, it could have been worse, and thankfully it wasn't but the match could have been better and I guess it was another one of those push Anderson up after being a monster, Abyss has done it all in TNA and I guess this is why really he's become this type of character to just make him more interesting again and bring him into a new life. Deranged monster was working well, a guy cutting promos that were borderline insane were pretty good but I think he's become a bit of a whiner a parody of who he used to be. But yes Anderson won.
TNA champ AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe with Eric Bischoff as the special referee
Excellent match, this was probably one of the matches of the night, I enjoyed the match and find that Joe and Styles really work well together in their matches even with Daniels tossed in they are epic. Take out Flair and Bischoff for storylines purposes and the match still gets a decent rating as far as i am concerned. I still think that AJ Styles is a bit weak mic skills/charisma wise at the moment to be the Phenomenal Nature Boy, hopefully Flair can teach him a bit of how to work the crowd, because something about AJ Styles annoys me, maybe it's the way he makes a point to mention the G in things, no that's not it, I mean it's a minor issue but pronouncing words has never been an issue, maybe it's just when he cuts a promo he's dull.
I mean Styles can work a great match, tell a story in the ring and entertain me but you throw the dude on a mircophone and I am sorry but you lose me big time. You have guys like Flair, Dinero, Anderson who just have the charisma and the skill to bring across their character and in Anderson and Flair's case they know how to make you hate them, Flair knows how to make you hate him, love him, pity him, and make you feel different emotions in one promo. Joe also I think is getting along in his promo skills, but he too just needs more work there too. But match wise I enjoyed it. It was top notch and I had no problems when I saw this one on the card.
Oh back onto the match Bischoff knocked Flair out and oversold the punch, either he did hurt himself or he was just overselling, he kinda botched his entrance in and out of the ring towards the end but I guess we can ignore that.
8 Card Stud Tournament Final: D'Angelo Dinero vs. Ken Anderson for Lockdown title shot.
Before the match Dinero was attacked by Waltman (what do we call him Syxx-Pac or X-Pac or what? Does TNA even know?) and Scott Hall and it left us wondering if there was going to be some kind of change to the match, but Dinero eventually came out but was attacked and attacked, and struggled to get back into the ring. Eventually Dinero fought back and Anderson did think he had it won and out of nowhere Dinero managed to steal the win, which was again oversold on commentary but this was a decent match, I expected Anderson to win the tournament even thought that before the brackets were announced and was surprised that Dinero won, though we do have a couple of months until Lockdown with Destination X coming up and I am keen to see the build up.
Overall it was a good PPV, TNA's announcing still annoys me, Taz needs to either choke out Tenay and have TNA magically bring in Joey Styles, or even Tony Schiavone (yes I know he's probably not much better, but Tenary fills me with no excitement..) or someone that can sell the matches. I think this is what TNA has always lacked WWE has Jim Ross or did have to do this he would drag you in, also whoever is feeding Taz the digs at WWE announcers and former announcers it's getting annoying. Yes Cole's not the best announcer and his vintage line is irritating, yes Adamle sucked so bad I am surprised the network didn't ban him from their show.
Tenay knows his stuff about wrestling, but I am not sure that he is a play by play guy, I never saw him as one in WCW, never wanted to he was good to add his input like a Taz. Taz in TNA kinda gets annoying, whether this is more noticable because people are trying to drown out Tenay I am not sure but I was always a fan of Syles, I'd hope one day he was able to get back into announcing but he's WWE property now. I do not know TNA just needs someone with charisma that can call the matches without killing it.
Maybe I am just a fan of the old school commentary teams, or I just hate Tenay, either way I am not a fan of TNA's announcer team, but I was less of a fan of Don West too. Hey I am free, sign me! I can bring an Australian accent to the show...or get Raven to become Johnny Polo and he can bring the posh annoying twit back.
There's some ideas, this here was my thoughts on Against All Odds my next attempt will be Elimination Chamber next week, .
