NXT Thoughts March 2, 2010
March 4th 2010 16:21
Standard show this week, we have been told that 2 people from the show are going to be promoted to the WWE, and that they are being evaluated by their mentors, the mentors will vote on who wins, they cannot vote for their rookie...but they also cannot vote against? Did I hear that correctly? Wade Bennett told a story about not caring if he entertains the fans, well if you do not entertain the fans Mr. Bennett you are going to be fired.
I still do not see this as being too revolutionary, looks more like FCW with some well established stars appearing to add ratings, it's just Velocity with rookies being mentored, and the ratings showed that this week, after a decent debut the rating came in as 1.3 the new concept appears not to be attracting many fans, yes I know what people are saying it's still going to get over TNA, well the rating might end up being better but the blandness of the show in general makes it dead. ECW at least had some storylines here and there, well I guess NXT does as well with some of the mentors giving the rookies shit, but some of them are just "Who cares?"
For example, Wade Bennett, big man, has some charisma, just boring, Darren Young, bland and boring. Michael Tarver, boring cannot cut a promo cannot make me excited and average in the ring. David Otunga has charisma might have the skill eventually but right now just annoys, I guess that's his character, but The Miz does it better, he's naturally got that arrogance, Otunga has it, but doesn't sell it. Right now the two stand outs for me has been Heath Slater, and Daniel Bryan. I am guessing the WWE has seen this as well, as they have had Carlito spit in his face this week, and I am sure the WWE knows a lot about Bryan.
Having Daniel Bryan facing Jericho last week, and having Jericho come down and commentate this week, and having the Miz do everything to mock him, the WWE are just allowing him to work his way through ring rust, at Bryan's request I might add. I can safely say these two are going to be promoted up, the others may have another year down in development.
Justin Gabriel didn't look honestly bad in the ring, grab a personality, might be a future dark horse. Skip Sheffield I am mixed about has a good look, like Bennett, but just has nothing to offer as far as ring or mic skills, during their little "intro promo" he was just dead. Wade may need to work on his in ring skills, make me care more about him on the mic and the WWE has themselves some stars ready to bump up.
I do not believe Tarver will make it, neither sadly will Darren Young unless he becomes a new member of the Straight Edge Society but I believe it only needs one more convert, and I believe that Joey Mercury when he returns has already got that signed and sealed, it does make sense former addict getting done for drugs and sacked coming back to be cleansed by Punk.
Otunga one more year, has the skill to get over has the charisma, needs to work it more, and WWE may also call him up early, I'd hope not, no offense to him, but he's a bit off his in ring ability needs some more work. Week 2 of NXT was uninteresting to say the least, and the ratings honestly reflected that the fans are not that interested in a repackaged Tough Enough.
Unless you want to book Bryan/Jericho for the next year, then I think this concept has already lost it's appeal. Wrestling fans aren't stupid, they know the winner has already been decided, and they know there is no reality there, and really they don't care, if a wrestling fan wanted reality TV they'd have watched Hogan Knows Best, which I tried hard to ignore....even Brooke Knows Best I tried my hardest to ignore that. MTV Australia thank you for allowing me to miss this rubbish.
Sorry Vince, this is just FCW on a national scale, the fans know it, there is no interest and you might as well prepare to call SyFy and scrap another show. Bring back Sunday Night HeAT and rename it Tuesday Night HeAT and allow some indy guys to work it, allow these FCW guys work it, and shut up about the "revolutionary concept" because to be honest it's stupid.
The only interesting part that looked like it was close to "reality" was Heath Slater and Christian in the gym, and Slater was working out. I suppose if the WWE showed training pre-show and how they prepared for a match, sure it would be scripted to hell, but at least that's better then what's going on. As a wrestling fan if the entertainment fails to entertain, you need to work on finding a way to entertain the fans, getting 1.8 last week and 1.3 this week shows that people a few people tuned in for the novelty of the show and were not clearly entertained.
Here's an idea allow us see the pre-show backstage stuff, telling us what they are going to do in the match, since this is "reality" we should see the "reality" of a wrestling's career, right? Should a wrestler blow a move and be chewed out, we should see this as well. It really makes sense if you look at it. Though the WWE won't, because it will "reveal wrestling secrets" zomg! Seriously wrestling fans have already seen all of that, Beyond The Mat gave us a good look at what goes on backstage, and we're not stupid.
While Daniel Bryan is on NXT I will be watching, I am sure that he will be there for awhile to come, and then head to one of the shows, or if he angers the wrong person he will be released, then there is always going back to ROH where us internet marks can type away at how awesome he is.
