NXT replacing ECW
February 5th 2010 16:09
WWE have announced that ECW will be no more, the show will be replaced by NXT which will be known as Next Generation, a show that will be featuring the future stars of the WWE. This will mean the established stars of the show will be moved to a new home, WWE are reportedly having a draft after Westlemania they may push the draft forward and send some of the guys to other shows, WWE will have to do something with this show to keep people interested, I fear that the show will have a very very short future. ECW has struggled in the ratings since the shows inception, and I really do not see the future stars of the WWE bringing the ratings of the show up.
You would think that with the contract coming up for renewal with the network unless the WWE can manage to pull a rabbit out of it's hat with this show I think it's done for. But I do not see why they are making a drastic move like this, change the name yes, but leave the stars there. These stars on the ECW roster are good workers, add 1 more hour to the show, start getting more writers to write more storylines and then you may see the show pick up. ECW has not been as bad as it's rating suggests, it does need more storylines, there has been a lack of them on the show.
A better network may save the show as well, I do not get the feeling that many wrestling fans are going to watch the SyFy Channel, and looking at their average ratings there are not many that continually watch the network.
That there are the ratings taken from Wikipedia, the channel is still known as the Sci Fi Channel on Foxtel/Austar and the programming is not that bad really, though watching re-runs of a lot of the old shows all the time does get a bit too repetitive. But the point is that wrestling isn't suited for this channel, I guess they were the only network looking to adopt the show but SyFy also wants the show to add some science fiction to the show. And I stop and shake my head asking WHY?
Wrestling fans do not want to see Sci-Fi stuff on the show, you are going to alienate the viewers you already have, to try and gain viewers that aren't interested in professional wrestling? When is the last time you have heard a Star Trek fan talking about wrestling? Or the last time a Buffy The Vampire Slayer fan said "Damn I wish there was a vampire on ECW!" I have never heard anyone say this. I love horror movies but I have never decided that I wanted to see horror brought into wrestling, I am watching wrestling, show me wrestling! Entertain me with the show I clearly want to watch, don't try and shove other shows I have no desire to watch down my neck during it.
I get that enough from the adverts during the show I do not need to see someone dressed as a zombie trying to convince me zombies exist in real life. Wrestling fans aren't dumb, well a fair chunk of them I cannot say for sure but I would imagine that the WWE would know their fans are not dumb, that they are not interested in someone pretending, and doing a very poor job at it, to be a vampire, zombie, alien, whatever else they want to push.
I hate to tell you this SyFy, but if someone came out dressed in Star Trek attire, I'd switch off not because of my not liking Star Trek, but I am not sitting there wanting to watch Star Trek, I want to watch ECW, or whatever show is on the tube. How would you feel if there was a meeting you were having, and someone came in dressed as Angel, and interrupted your meeting? Yeah you wouldn't like it would you?
I have always wanted to see ECW with an extra hour, the shows always looks like it's being rushed, everyone is rushing to get things done, even though they tape it, you can almost get the feeling that to make sure there 's just the hour that they rush more. That's just my view though, the show does need storylines, the show does need to have faces on there that people are going to know to entice them to want to watch the show how are you going to save it without a well known face here and there?
The ratings are bad now, but just wait until you start to push more and more guys that are not known to people they are just not going to really care, at least if a Christian, CM Punk, Triple H type name is around people are going to sit there and watch the show. The show gets a crowd because there are two tapings happening, tape it alone and see how many show up to see a guy they have never heard of.
It's really just common sense...So now we are losing ECW again, well I am going to post a blog in tribute to the final death of ECW, because being a former ECW fan, I feel the need to pay tribute to the show I once loved a lot and enjoyed to see. Hell I enjoyed the new ECW as well, but really didn't like the "ECW" being used.
But now it's gone again.

In 2008, Syfy, then the Sci Fi Channel, averaged a 1.0 Household rating; 242,000 Adults 18-34 (up 4% vs 2007); 616,000 Adults 18-49 (up 5% vs 2007); 695,000 Adults 25-54 (up 6% vs 2007) and 1,278,000 total viewers (up 7% vs 2007). It saw two years of consecutive growth among female audiences, with a 12% increase among women 25-54, a 14% jump in women 18-49 and 6% in women 18-34. The channel also was ranked among the top ten watched channels for male viewers ages 18–54, and women ages 25–54 (#10)
