Hart Attack, or Hart Failure - The Bret Hart return rebooked
January 21st 2010 07:06
November 9th 1997 is a date that is going to be remembered in wrestling history forever, it was the the night that Bret Hart was screwed out of his WWF Title at the time. That same year Bret saw his 20 year WWF contract vanish, and saw him end up in WCW, even though he had no real desire to go there. We've heard the story from different sides for years, but now it seems to have become a dead point, well between Hart, and Michaels on screen, maybe even in person who knows.
The bitterness seemed to really chew up and spit Bret Hart out, a guy that was one of the top wrestlers throughout the 1990s went from working for the one company to working for a company that's own success was their own down fall in the end...but more about WCW at a later date. 1999 saw a screwjob ending repeated this time Hart, who in that same match suffered the blow that would later end his professional wrestling career was on the other end. He and Goldberg battled for the WCW World Heavyweight Title, only for the match to have an ending that saw the formation of n.W.o 2000, anyway the point is, we have seen this real life incident turned into an angle over and over again, why not use it to bring in Hart?
You have the WWE Royal Rumble coming up, every man for himself for a title shot at Wrestlemania you have Shawn Michaels wanting to face The Undertaker again, it could have been used to have Shawn and Triple H battle each other for the chance to battle for the WWE World Heavyweight Shot. Imagine having Shawn Michaels as a heel, turning on Bret Hart after a match after they have already shook hands, while Shawn's attacking Bret, Triple H grabs Michaels and hits the pedigree on him, the next week Shawn and Vince are together in the ring, both as heels saying how they again teamed to “screw Bret” again.
Or, Vince and Bret could have confronted each other, Vince attacks Bret, HBK runs down and pulls Vince off of Bret, and then he attacks Bret himself, they start throwing blows, the music of Triple H's hits, and he comes down to the ring and saves Bret, the next week, Vince and Shawn are in the ring, Vince says he didn't want Bret back, but he did so for Shawn he wanted to put him out of the WWE once and for all..and they start to run down Triple H who “threw in a friendship” to save Hart and so on.
Again, they are playing on the Montreal thing, but they are doing so to further a possible Wrestlemania match, but also keep Bret as a baby face and keep him in the loop, Bret could then come back, and say he has bought WWE Shares and with his shares he has made himself the permanent Raw General Manager and he was going to make a match at the Royal Rumble between HBK and HHH that the winner got to enter the WWE Royal Rumble, Bret comes out with Triple H, Vince with Shawn, a battle ensues, this match could be used for two things, one you could turn Triple H heel on Bret, and have them both enter the Royal Rumble, this was their plan to get Bret back, and to also get themselves a favourable entry into the rumble.
Or you could have Bret turn heel, saying this was his master plan, that over the years he had thought about this, and thought about hos silly it was to be bitter when he could come back and have a great place on the WWE Roster, as a head of Raw, and control everything his own way, or you can completely by pass it all and just set up for Wrestlemania with a triple threat with Undertaker, Shawn, and Triple H.
Right now, I have to wonder if the Bret Hart return was a mistake, in the terms that WWE had many possible angles and they went the wrong way. Sure Bret Hart does have heat with Vince, but he had equal heat with HBK as well as he was in on all of tis as well. It's fine to put the bitterness aside but you can still work the angle, instead we got to see Vince strike Bret, and then that's been it, we are still yet to see any further idea's here, he could have had Jericho a former Hart Family trainee come out and say how disgusted he was with the attack on Bret, they had the Hart Dynasty at the event, personally flew them there, and they didn't really capitalise on that. While I do see Bret is selling the attack that Vince did, he could have had the Hart Dynasty by now come out and show their disappointment, and this could be a way for Vince to use them more asnd push them further in this as well.
Right now though, I guess we do have to wait and see what the WWE is going to do, the rumours of a match at Wrestlemania between Vince and Bret, in Bret's condition has me worried about this. I do not want to see a match that is going to really lack any type of interest, sure you are going to have the fans interested in seeing Bret, a baby face attack Vince back in a street fight, but you could have done so many things with a storyline leading into Wrestlemania, and beyond. Maybe I do not see the point in having a match between two men that sees one unable to really sustain any blows, not able to take bumps and just cannot ever be entertaining it's just going to have the fans angry at Vince, with them wanting Bret to hurt Vince for what he did.
But how will it end though? I am sure Vince has a desire to get one over on Bret again, but right now the WWE is making money on Bret Hart merchandise, and they have the Hart family DVD coming out very soon as well. So you know there is going to be a lot of plugging of the DVD so it may see Bret get over on Vince, as a marketing ploy to see the DVD sell more and more, but angle wise, WWE has missed the boat here.
I am sorry to say that right now the Hart return reeks of a Hart failure, and unless there is a massive recovery to this angle, and some idea's change the ending too will be a failure.
