Wrestling Asylum - September 2007

ECW 20/9 thoughts

September 22nd 2007 00:35
I enjoyed ECW this week. Not the best ep ever, but some good stuff on it. Any episode where Stevie Richards and Tommy Dreamer get MIC TIME!~ has to be good!

Speaking of that opening interview segment, Thorn was better on the mic than I thought he'd be. The whole thing set up to the 'Elimination Chase' nicely. It's good that they're doing something different to crown a new number #1 contender rather than a battle royal or something else that's gotten tired.

Shame the Stevie is out of contention (not that he woulda won it anyway), but the four-way bout was pretty good. A bit slow and plodding at times, but some good spots and the story of the match (that whoever was pinned would be eliminated from the 'Chase') made it good.

I may cop some weird looks for saying this, but the Miz/Balls/Kelly storyline is one of my favourites in the WWE at the moment. Miz is awesome in his new character (I've finally come around to liking his Chick Magnet schtick, after not being too much of a fan at first), Balls is great as the sympathetic loveable-loser, and Kelly is hot!! Was good to see Mahoney get a win too. I'm guessing we won't be seeing Knox around for too much longer, if they're jobbing him like that.

And finally, the main-event was decent enough for the type of match it was. I'm sure most people were expecting a slow, 'five minute bearhug' type match, but what we got instead was actually pretty fast-paced. A decent ending to the Boogeyman/Daddy V feud. I wonder who both of them will feud with next.

IF YOU MISSED IT: Like Raw this week, there wasn't one particular match or moment that you should go out of your way to catch, but if the replay's on and you're not doing anything, give it a watch as it was an alright show.

WWE Raw (September 19) thoughts...

September 21st 2007 00:57
I thought this week's ep was pretty enjoyable, without being great.

The show started off solidly with Hardy V Shelton who had an alright match (which was the best match on the show, although that's not saying much). Looks like Haas' suspension is a blessing for Shelton who is being pushed as a singles wrestler once again. Granted, he isn't winning any matches, but it's surely better than being in pointless tag bouts against the Highlanders on Heat each week.

Santino Marella continues to be absolutely hilarious. His line about how he can't believe he used to pleasure himself to Britney Spears was great!! And it was good to see him get a top-level rub by being involved in the beatdown of Cena with Orton.

That flag match was totally out of nowhere (not to mention, Daivari representing Iran was out of continuity with his gimmick [he's billed from America! Isn't his whole deal that he's an American but feels discriminated because of his Middle Eastern background. Oh well]). I guess they do need to chuck filler stuff like that in now, considering so much Raw talent is out on suspension at the moment.

I have to admit, I did find some of the McMahon/Coach/Hornswoggle skits funny. And I thought the HHH/Vince in-ring segment was pretty good too. Speaking of HHH though... this brings me to the bit of the show that pissed me off the most (and I think you all know where I'm going)...

It was completely unnecessary to have him destroy London and Kendrick for no reason at all. It was bad enough that they had him beat Cade/Murdoch so easily. The booking for this stuff is really simply... Cade, Murdoch and Carlito are attacking HHH, London and Kendrick come to his aid, and voila!, we have a 6-man tag set up for next week (which would've given L K a huge rub by teaming up with HHH). But no, instead, HHH beats up London and Kendrick too, making them look like complete fools in the process. Very counterproductive booking. HHH is already mega-over, all the segment accomplished was that it buried Cade, Murdoch, London and Kendrick (after they'd all been pushed quite heavily lately). Total rubbish.

The whole Cena/Orton/Cena Sr. schtick to end the show was wonderfully done, I thought. Great angle that set up nicely for their rematch. Although, the crowd did kinda ruin it a bit with the "You Can't Wrestle" chants at Cena. I mean, bloody hell. The guy has probably been in more MOTY candidates this year than anyone else. Didn't all this anti-Cena crap end over a year ago?

IF YOU MISSED IT: No need to go out of your way to see the replay, but if you're home and not doing anything else, give it a watch, as it wasn't that bad a show.

Smackdown! September 7 thoughts

Very enjoyable episode of Smackdown! this week, with two really good matches and some other fun stuff too.

The two good matches I'm referring to are obviously Kane/Batista V Finlay/Khali and Mysterio/Chavo in the I Quit match. That tag bout was way better than I imagined. When I saw the graphic for it, I was just thinking, here we go again- same old filler match, what's the bet Finlay takes the fall. And although Finlay was the one to get pinned (no surprises there), I thought the match was very enjoyable (much better than I remember their SNME bout being).

As for the I Quit Match, it wasn't nearly as good as the first one they had but was still decent nonetheless. I was waiting for a more hot finishing sequence though (Like Punk/Morrison for the latest ECW). It ended too quickly for me, would've liked to see another 5 or so minutes of back-and-forward action. The post-match beatdown on Rey by Khali was very well done though (the blood was a nice touch).

Pretty much all of WWE's storylines right now are very entertaining. MVP/Hardy's 'relationship' continues to develop interestingly. Both men- especially MVP- are so great in their roles right now. MVP is simply fantastic at the moment. I really enjoyed the opening segment.

As for the Noble/Horsnwoggle angle... I didn't like it at first, but I must admit, I found the (Wile E. Coyote) antics on tonight's ep to be very funny. I even laughed at Jesse and Festus' appearance. Sure, the whole thing's incredibly cheesy... but it works! And it's good to see Noble involved in an actual storyline. Heck, it even gives Shannon Moore something to do each week!

IF YOU MISSED IT: Catch the replay! This was one of the best SD!'s in a while. Kane/Batista V Finlay/Khali and Rey/Chavo were both above-average matches, the opening VIP Lounge segment was great, and the Noble/Hornswoggle stuff that ran throughout the show was very funny. Top episode!

IWA TV September 3 2007 thoughts

September 4th 2007 07:37
Well, for the first time ever something other than WWE is being looked at on this site! IWA have a TV show (the first weekly Oz wrestling show in many, many years, excluding HRPR on Ch9 and ASW on Ch31 which only lasted a few eps each, from memory).

Was on at a bit of a rough timeslot for me, as I also wanted to watch Andrew Denton interview Kyle Sandilands on Ch2 and ep two of Californication on Ch10, but wrestling won out (of course!) [ Click here to read more ]
