Wrestling Asylum - August 2007

Raw (August 29) thoughts...

August 29th 2007 23:29
The post-Summerslam edition of Raw was ok. Not spectacular by any means, but there was some entertaining stuff throughout.

The returning Jeff Hardy V Kennedy was a pretty good match, easily the best on the ep. Some pretty good spots throughout, such as Kennedy lifting his knees as Jeff tried the Swanton-- that one looked brutal! It's a shame that they turned Umaga heel again so quickly. Whilst his face run wasn't exactly setting the world on fire, it would've been good if he had a few more weeks to try and get over as a good guy. The post-match beatdown on Jeff did look really good though.

From what I've read all over the Net, it seems that generally, most people didn't like the HHH/Carlito/Vince segment. Personally, I found it to be really funny. Not as much so as The Dating Game from a few weeks back (where was Santino and Simmons on this show, by the way?), but it still contained some chuckle-worthy moments. And it's good to see Triple H back!

What the heck is up with Shelton's new hairstyle?? It looks ridiculous!

Orton's beatdown of Cena's dad was very well-done and adds another dimension to their feud. Hopefully they treat this as a heated blood-feud now, and not have Cena come out next week and make gay jokes towards Randy.

IF YOU MISSED IT: Hardy/Kennedy (and the Umaga post-match beatdown of Jeff) and the Triple H segment may be worth a check on the replay if you can be bothered (and if you do check the replay out, make sure you get a glimpse of Shelton's Koko B Ware-esque hairdo! )

Wasn't too impressed with this show. I thought the last one (with the Biggest, Strongest, Smallest, Strangest theme) was much more fun to watch. There were some ok moments on this one too though.

The opener was nothing we haven't seen on Smackdown! hundreds of time already. It was predictable going in that Finlay would be the one getting pinned. Some good spots though, like the double chokeslam on Khali, and Kane/Batista using Hornswoggle as a weapon.

The Vince skits were just lame all night. Very unfunny stuff, I thought, especially the bit where Vince looked into the mirror and saw a younger version of himself (not a fan of stuff like that). Austin was a nice surprise, but the whole thing still wasn't really that entertaining.

Cena/Carlito was pretty much a squash. It seemed like they were gearing Carlito up for a top level push, but that doesn't seem like the case anymore. Orton's post-match RKO to Cena on the chair looked pretty cool though.

All the pre-match stuff for the Holyfield/Hardy bout was fantastic. From Michael Buffer (who I never expected to see on WWE TV!) to MVP coming out with a huge entourage (he should do that each week!). But the execution was quite disappointing, and in my mind, just made Matt Hardy look like a prop rather than give him the rub it could have. Rather than have Matt be decimated for one round before Evander turned on MVP, they should've let it go, say, 3 rounds (with Holyfield dominating, of course, but some false comebacks and signs of life from Hardy). They could've showed Holyfield getting more and more mad at MVP, and eventually snap after the third round, punching him out. That way, Hardy would've got a better rub (surviving three rounds, despite being on the losing end for most of the time, against Evander Holyfield) and the pop when they shook hands afterwards would've been much louder. So yeah, the segment got MVP over as a heel, and created another WWE-Celebrity moment, but didn't really do anything for Matt like it should have. Still a good segment though.

The ECW match at the end just seemed really random and a bit out of place (maybe because there was no mention of it throughout the show at all). It was as if someone said 'Damn! We have a third brand, don't we?' and quickly brought out Tazz to call it. The match was very poor too, and didn't really advance the Punk/Morrison or Boogeyman/Big Daddy V feuds. CM Punk getting the fluke small-package win was very anticlimatic considering he beat Morrison cleanly two weeks ago.

IF YOU MISSED IT: Check out the Holyfield/Hardy segment, just cause it's something different (and like I said before, all the pre-game stuff was very well done). Nothing else is really worth watching.

I enjoyed Smackdown!. It was easily better than Raw and ECW this week.

Yet another wrestler interview show! I admit though, the name The VIP Lounge is pretty clever, and the set was kinda cool. I thought the segment was very well done; it was probably the highlight of the show. Matt Hardy is huge right now, and the MVP/Hardy feud is really hot. The segment made people want to see Hardy/MVP for the title, hyped Evander Holyfield's appearance (Which blows TNA's recent 'Pacman' stunt right out of the water!), and gave Masters a rub by involving him. So overall, it was a success.

The Deuce & Domino V Major Brothers match was also very good. Probably the Majors' best match to date. I look forward to seeing them go for longer in the future. With that been said though, I still wish London and Kendrick were on SD! (where they played a big part, as opposed to now when they're on Heat most of the time).

Finlay/Noble and Chavo/Moore were both decent while they lasted. Chavo is such an awesome heel right now-- him talking to Rey's mask afterwards was great. Like I said last week, I really hope this push he's getting right now lasts long after the feud with Rey.

The Batista promo started out boring, but by the end, managed to hype up the PPV match with Khali quite well. I'm sure the match will exceed most people's expectations. Khali isn't as bad as people say he is, and Batista has proven that he's more than just a big-guy-stiff a la Heidenreich, Tomko, etc.

I thought Kane V Khali was a decent-enough big-man match that did its job in further establishing Khali's claw as a devastating finisher. They've done a great job in getting that move over during the past few weeks. It's a much better finisher for him to have than that chop to the head.

IF YOU MISSED IT: If you're home and not doing anything when the replay's on, check it out, as this was a pretty decent show. Nothing absolutely outstanding, but still a good episode that- like I said earlier- was the best of the three shows this week.

ECW (August 16, 2007) thoughts

August 17th 2007 00:36
This week's ECW was better than last week's poor offering, but still a pretty average show.

Armando Estrada is a very good choice for ECW GM, I think. He hasn't been doing anything for a while (plus, it's about time ECW got another authority figure for storyline purposes), and is still pretty over. I don't know why they've dropped the 'Alejandro' from his name though, considering [his catchphrase-- the way he says his name] was extremely over and had the crowd screaming it along with him. Should've kept it, I reckon, but anyway- the opening segment was pretty decent. Morrison's promo here was quite poor (with the writers just trying to chuck in as many of those sayings as possible), but Punk's mic-work was really good. Overall-- an entertaining opening segment, even though the contract-signing schtick has been done to death

WWE Raw (August 15) thoughts

Nothing great (or even good) wrestling-wise on this show, but it was still an entertaining-enough episode, highlighted of course, by the hilarious WWE Idol!

I'm not the biggest fan of this illigitimate-child storyline (or having Vince be the main focus of everything once again), but I guess they did have to come up with another cliffhanger considering they dropped the Limo-Explosion one. Everyone (thanks to the Net) think it's going to be Kennedy, but I wouldn't be surprised if WWE pull a swerve and change it to someone else now that the original plan was leaked. I don't know how these storylines get leaked; surely Vince can try and find out, as it had to have come from a WWE employee

WWE Smackdown! (August 10) thoughts

August 10th 2007 09:18
Another ho-hum ep of Smackdown! this week. The crowd were hot throughout which was good, but the show on a whole, was quite poor.

I don't care what anyone says, I reckon Khali is great as champ. It would've been better if they had him take the belt off Cena though (rather than have Cena get clean wins over him straight away). His little translator buddy is warming on me too. Hopefully he doesn't drop the belt to Batista at Summerslam-- I'd like to see his run last for a while longer

Another just-average edition of SD! this week. ECW was easily the best of all three shows. There were some decent moments though, so let's go through it...

I really can't wait for the Long/Kristal wedding! (Which by the way, is on September 21. When was the last time they announced a date for this sort of thing so far in advance?!). Say what you want about them, but WWE's wedding segments are always entertaining (for me, anyway) and with Faarooq on board as best-man, this one should be no different. Damn

ECW (August 2, 2007) thoughts

August 2nd 2007 10:38
I enjoyed this weeks' ECW much better than Raw. Shame the ratings are reflecting the shows' high quality, as the brand really has been getting better and better since Morrison became champ.

Speaking of Morrison, I know I had a bit of a rant in the latest Raw Thoughts blog (read it!!) about the WWE's overuse of the champ-cuts-a-promo-and-is-int errupted-by-a-handful-of-chal lengers-which-leads-to-a-matc h-later-on segments to open the shows, but I really enjoyed this one. Maybe it's because I'm such a fan of Morrison's micwork for some reason, plus Burke, Punk and Dreamer don't get mic-time all that often. The only lame bit in John's promo was the Paris Hilton joke. I mean, damn! Enough with the Paris/Lindsay/etc. references. The writers probably think they're the funniest lines ever, but the live crowd don't react to them because Paris Hilton jokes are done on pretty much every comedy show there is nowadays

WWE Raw (August 1) thoughts

August 2nd 2007 04:35
Another very average episode of Raw this week. The biggest news coming out of the show is the horrible rating it did (a 2.4, its lowest in a decade and over 25% lower than last weeks' show). Losing a quarter of the audience in one week is obviously not good, and WWE have got to be in damage control right now. Wouldn't surprise me if they'll resort to begging the Jackass guys to come back on board. Anyways, onto the show...

Well, the opening sequence has been the same for so many weeks in a row now. Cena opens the show, starts talking, gets interrupted by a handful of people who say they deserve a title shot. As I've mentioned before, the writing of these sorts of segments at the moment (particularly Cena's lines) are pathetic. Cena's lines now generally tend to be either
