Wrestling Asylum - July 2007

SMACKDOWN! 27/7 THOUGHTS

Well, I thought SD! was definitely the worst of all three shows this week. I was hoping its' usual high quality wouldn't be effected by the draft, but it obviously has been.

Batista V Deuce wasn't horrible, but it was predictable and pretty much just a squash. Surely four squashes on one show is a little too much though (Kane/Taylor, Chavo/Eugene and Henry/Jobber).

I reckon Hornswoggle as champ is great, but I'm not a fan of those sort of stalling, pantomine matches like the one he had with Noble. With that said though, I know I can't have it both ways, as it's not like he can have regular matches with anyone. Noble was great though. And they even had him do a promo!! Stevie Richards winning a match and Jamie Noble getting mic time all in one week!!! Amazing!

Hardy/Flair V Masters/MVP was ok but nothing special. Was the best match of the night, but that's not really saying much. I enjoyed the exchange of words between Hardy and MVP at the end of the match as well. Both of them are just fantastic right now.

The Ron Simmons/Teddy Long backstage bit was hilarious, I thought! I hated the idea of a romance angle between Long and Kristal at first, but I can't wait for the wedding segment now that Faarooq's gonna be the best man!

I probably would've enjoyed the Great Khali Celebration Party segment more if, I dunno, they hadn't done the exact same thing like two weeks ago with Edge. With that said though, some of the lines were pretty funny (and JBL- as always- was wonderful on commentary). Plus, seeing Khali dance was gold!

IF YOU MISSED IT: Don't worry. You didn't miss much. No need to catch the replay for this one, unless you really want to see The Great Khali dance!

ECW (July 26, 2007) thoughts

ECW 26/7 THOUGHTS

I thought this week's ECW was much better than it looked on paper. Overall, quite a solid effort.

I'm really loving Johnny Nitro John Morrison at the moment. His promos have been top-notch and I'm really digging the look. I was skeptical about the name/gimmick change at first, but definitely think it's working now-- he truly comes off as a World Champion. This "15 Minutes Of Fame" challenge is a good idea too. Hopefully they don't do to it what they did to the Angle Invitational and the Masterlock Challenge and stretch it out forever to a point where nobody cares anymore.

Thorn V Richards was better than it had any right to be. Was a short, hard-hitting match with lots of cool-looking spots (like Thorn clotheslining Richards' feet when he was on the ring-apron). And Richards getting a win was very surprising!! Hopefully this wasn't just a one-off and they will start to give him a decent push.

So Miz is a heel this week?? I'm a fan of Miz's, but not so much the 'Miz: Chick Magnet' gimmick. It's good that they've stopped trying to make him a face with it though. Still can't see it going anywhere good; they should've kept him on Smackdown.

I must admit, I thought the Big Daddy V 2 jobbers squash was quite fun to watch. I found it much better than the usual squash bouts they do (ie- Snitzky's matches). And Matt Striker is still awesome! One of my favourite heels in the company, actually.

The main-event was nothing we haven't seen before. It's a shame that Elijah Burke has been made into such an afterthough- that guy = money!! But I guess there is only room for one heel at the top on a one-hour wrestling program.

IF YOU MISSED IT: Well, nothing that big or important really happened but it was a solid show, so if you get a chance to catch the replay, watch it, but if you don't, no big loss (unless you really want to see Stevie Richards win, which in all probability won't happen again in a long, long time! )

WWE Raw (July 25, 2007) thoughts

July 26th 2007 00:46
Hey all!! Thanks for checking out my blog.
Keep checking throughout the week as I'll be posting my thoughts on all WWE programming, as well as anything else wrestling-related that pops into my mind!
Hope you like it!

Raw thoughts.
July 25, 2007.

The opening 'meeting of the Kings' segment was terrific. Booker's large throne and gourmet food across the table from Lawler's croissant and cup of coffee was a hilarious visual gag. Booker calling Lawler 'Jerome' was all kinds of funny too. Can't wait for their match next week!

The divas match was nothing special, but Santino on commentary was wonderful. A babyface-womanbeater (which is what it looks like his new gimmick may be) is kinda stepping into 'controversial' territory, but WWE usually pulls these dark-humour angles off well. And I'm sure it will end up with him turning on Maria. I reckon he'd be great as a heel who hates women (a la Jeff Jarrett in 1999).

Snitzky's face (especially his teeth) really is a turn-off!! I hope the rumours aren't true and he won't be in the main-event picture anytime soon.

John Cena's lines the past few weeks have plain-out sucked. Sometimes I wonder if the writers are 6 and write these promos with crayons. That 'close your eyes and imagine...' schtick with Todd Grisham was just embarassing to watch. Very lame.

I'm enjoying the Sandman/Hacksaw V Regal/Carlito mini-feud.

Randy Orton continues to be the man! I kinda lost interest in him for a while, but this feud against the Rhodes has been great for him. His match with Cody was decent enough, and he's really getting more and more over as a heel. This Cena/Orton program should be great. It's such a shame though, that Raw's best two heels (Booker and Orton) will soon become HHH Victim #1 and #2 respectively.

I really enjoyed Kennedy/Hardy. Definitely the MOTN. I've always been a big Matt fan, but not so much Jeff. Lately though, Jeff has been on such a role and- as seen by the crowd reaction on Raw- is becoming more and more popular. The pop he got when he did a run-in in the main-event was phenomenal!

London/Kendrick V Haas/Benjamin was ok for the time it was given. I'm still not used to seeing L K on Raw though. Much preferred them on SD! where they played a more important role and JBL praised them through the roof each and every week.

The main-event was nothing special wrestling-wise, but still entertaining. Lots of good spots that ensured the crowd were into it (Cade/Murdoch holding out Candice for Umaga to do his running-knee-hit was great). If this was TNA though, Cena would be the sole-owner of both tag team titles.

IF YOU MISSED IT: Catch the replay. The King Lawler-King Booker segment is GOLD and the Kennedy V Hardy bout is very solid. Plus-- Santino on commentary was great!
